Nutritional and food security
While, in 2022, 690 million people suffered from hunger worldwide, the WFP estimates that at least 783 million people were experiencing chronic hunger at the end of 2023, of whom more than 333 million faced high levels of food insecurity. As a result of these developments, in 2023 the WFP was faced with negative financing prospects in 2023, which led to reductions in food aid. In view of what was at stake, Luxembourg granted record humanitarian aid of EUR 13.77 million (an increase of 7% compared to the previous year) to the WFP in 2023 to support it in its efforts to reduce the risk of famine. That financial envelope also included an additional contribution to the Rohingya crisis, allocated by Luxembourg following a field visit by Minister Franz Fayot in April 2023.
